Hatha Yoga: An Integrated Practice
Led by Jason Birch and Jacqueline Hargreaves
This two-part workshop will present a broad scope of Hatha Yoga, laying the foundations with cleansing practices (Kriyas) and postures (Asana), to establish a practice of breathing techniques (Pranayama) and meditation. Each session focuses on a different aspect of Hatha Yoga, culminating in a complete practice that may be varied for the needs of each student.

Cleansing and Strengthening (Kriyas and Asana)
Exploring the cleansing practices (Kriyas) of Hatha Yoga, this first session includes step-by-step instruction on the practice of Kapalabhati and Nauli (with many variations). Traditionally, the Kriyas were taught before Asanas, to those who suffered from excessive phlegm (Kapha imbalances) and fat. These Kriyas are particularly useful for certain sinus, throat, stomach, lung and digestive tract problems. A general practice of Asanas (postures) will follow to improve overall health and vitality. The combination of Kriyas and Asanas creates a strong sense of lightness and openness in the body as well as the feeling of steadiness and calm.

Balancing the Nervous System and Mastering the Mind (Pranayama and Meditation)
Pranayama (breathing exercises) are integral to the practice of the ancient art of Hatha Yoga. In this second session, the focus is on breathing (Pranayama) techniques and their various effects. The Kriyas of Kapalabhati and Nauli will be used as a preparation for the invigorating effects of Bhastrika (bellows breath), followed by the balancing calm of Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) and the cooling breath of Shitali Pranayama. The heightened state of clarity and relaxation induced by Pranayama will lead us into Meditation. Fundamental instructions on posture, breath and technique will be given for the practice of Meditation.
Jason Birch has been dedicated to the study of Sanskrit and the practice of Yoga since 1996. His knowledge of Yoga is a combination of what he has learned from practising modern Hatha Yoga, Chi Gung and Zen, as well as his academic research into the Hatha Yoga tradition. For the last year, Jason has been reading for a DPhil by research into Yoga at Oxford University and is also collecting Sanskrit Yoga manuscripts in India.
The style of Yoga Jason has developed is based on the five limbs of Hatha Yoga; Kriyas, Asanas, Pranayama, Mudras and Meditation. The emphasis is on applying the Mudras particular to Hatha Yoga, to change the breath and build vitality. Jason's strength lies in his ability to combine an academic and practical knowledge of Yoga to explain and demonstrate the rejuvenating practices of this ancient art.
Jason taught Yoga at Como Shambhala for two years and contributed several modules to their 2008 Teacher Training.
