Intro to Satyananda Yoga

Next commencement date - Saturday, 3 July 2010
This programme of 4-weeks offers a good opportunity to those who are keen on trying out the different yogic paths in a weekly class setting. As Satyananda Yoga adopts the attitudes of Jnana Yoga (the path of knowledge), Bhakti Yoga (the path of heart and emotion), Karma Yoga (the path of service) and other Yoga traditions into its practice, participants will be able to gain an understanding of how this adaptable system, developed by Swami Satyananda Saraswati and his lineage, can be made meaningful and relevant to modern day life.
Satyananda Yoga uses practices in a traditional way, asanas (postures) to balance the body and mind through the physical body, pranayama (breathing practices) to work on the energy body (equated with Qi in other systems), and meditation to calm and focus the mind. It also takes a broader outlook by teaching and encouraging yogic lifestyles beyond the class.
The programme will incorporate the following components:
1. Asanas (50% of class time)
Yoga postures (asanas) invigorate the body, improve health and flexibility, and remove energy blockages and tension. Those postures taught in class include the classic yoga asanas, building up to them gently. Asanas are explored in a non-competitive atmosphere with an emphasis on awareness. As the student?s experience deepens, more complex and challenging practices are gradually introduced.
2. Pranayama (25% of class time)
Breath work (pranayama) is the second major component of a class. The aim of pranayama is to awaken, balance and expand the prana or life energy in the system. Pranayama is also useful for inducing relaxation and lessening mental and emotional disturbances. Pranayama training begins with natural breath awareness and progresses through deep, relaxed breathing to a variety of tranquillising and quieting practices.
3. Meditation (25% of class time)
Meditation expands awareness and develops calmness, serenity and focus, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of our inner nature. Meditation also has much to offer as a tool for enhancing concentration, willpower and resistance to stress. In Satyananda Yoga, meditation techniques are taught systematically, and over a course of sessions, cover body awareness, breath awareness, inner observation and mantra (sound).
Through focusing on the importance of awareness of being, Satyananda Yoga promotes the alignment of body, mind, emotions and spirit, to bring about a sense of perspective, calm and inner strength. Satyananda Yoga is suitable for practitioners of all fitness levels, including those with no prior Yoga experience.
Intro to Satyananda Yoga is led by Eugenia Gajardo, a corporate leader of over 20 years who has found that the key to inner balance and peace, for her, was through yoga and meditation. To this end, she has completed the rigorous three-year, 2,200-hour Satyananda Yoga Teacher Training at the Ashram in Mangrove Mountain, Australia, and has also studied and practised many different techniques of meditation, including Vipassana, Mindfulness, Antar Mouna and Khaya Sthayrium.
